Hi! You asked me about a sewing machine. I am a Bernina loyal. However my first machine was a singer. There is nothing wrong with starting with a more affordable machine. i suggest not going with the cheapest, but something in the middle. You want to make sure that it has a good amount of basic functions that will get you through. I would get a singer or Kenmore. kenmore's are built to last. My Mom still has her first one from 30 years ago runs great! Hope that helps!

i saw your post on the common threads blog..thanks for coming by. i sew on an old, cheap singer...it's fine for piecing, but if you want to machine quilt you need something better. i don't believe you need to spend thousands of dollars either. i would look for a mid range machine...just make sure it has a walking foot, can drop the feeddogs and has a needle down feature. don't let them try to sell you a bunch of fancy stuff that you'll rarely use. these are the 3 features that i use all the time and they make the difference between quality work and sloppy stuff.

hello! thanks for visiting my blog. i sew on a fairly cheap Brother for piecing and a 30+ year old Viking for quilting. I'd love to someday have a fancy schmancy Bernina, but for now I get quite a bit done on a cheap machine. My hubbie bought me the Brother at Walmart a few years ago when I thought my Viking was going to die. I was disapointed, dreaming of getting my Bernina, but that little Brother has done quite well for me. Its a Brother CS6000. I'm not sure its strong enough to do the actual quilting though. Good luck in your search for a sewing machine!
